This article will illustrate how to write a band 9 essay which recently came in IELTS exam conducted on 30 June 2018 general writing task 1. This will also include the key elements to be incorporated and planned before writing you task1 letter. Before you read this article, you must be aware that time is the key here. If you are able to write a letter in 10 minutes and another 10 minutes to find your mistakes and correct them, then their good chances that you will get a good band score.

Let us start with the analysis part and analyze the question which came in IELTS writing task 1 for general candidates.

Here is the question.

You recently read a book which you liked a lot and now you want to recommend this book to your friend.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter

– What is the book about.
– Where did you find this book?
– Why you recommend this book.

Now, as soon as you see the question slowly and calmly read it. I would recommend to read it twice or thrice so that you are well aware of the topic question and what it demands from you to write. Once you instill it, which will take only 1 minute, the next step is to write down the subtopic answers. For example,

– What is the book? (Wings of Fire, written by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam)
– From where did you get this book. (In an exhibition held in New Delhi.)
– Why you recommend this book. (Book inspires a lot, the Real story of Dr. Kalam, Shows how a common man can grow from toils and moils)

Here, after each sub-question, I have written the answers. Remember only take 2-3 minutes to think and write your answers. If you do not know the book name and topic, then write any arbitrary book name and chose your own topic which will be inside the virtual book. This way you will not waste time in thinking about the book if you are not a fan of reading books. Now since we have utilized our 3 minutes (1 for analyzing and 3 for writing answers of subquestions), its time to write our letter in 7 minutes. Since it is an informal letter the tone of the letter will be informal and should
accurately answer the topic question.

The salutation should be written, which can be like

Dear Amit,
or
Dear Abc

After salutation, the next line relates to the topic questions, not the subquestions. Here in this line, we have to write the motive behind writing this letter. For example, it can be

I am writing to you to recommend a book that recently purchased from an exhibition. The book is based on the biography of your all-time favorite Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Allow me to elaborate more on this book and why I am recommending this book to you.

Here,
in the above lines, we can see that the motive of the letter is clearly mentioned. The vocabulary used is neither typical nor mediocre which can be understood by a common person as it is an informal letter. Let us know focus on the subquestions and write 2-3 lines for every subquestion. For example,

(Answering the first subquestion, What is the book about? it took 2 minutes to write below paragraph)
The book is an autobiography of Dr. Kalam and its name is Wings of Fire written by himself after becoming president of India. This book tells the complete story of his struggle from being born in a poor family to becoming president of India. The book has his original signature on the cover page and his signatures are very rare after his death.

(Answering the second subquestion, Where did you find this book? it took 2 minutes to write below paragraph)
I found this book when I went to a book exhibition where most of the popular books were exhibited. The book has a nice cover page with the picture of Dr. Kalam on it. At first glance I found it to be an interesting book as the book cover tells that it is one of the best seller books in India.

(Answering the third subquestion Why you recommend this book, it took 2 minutes to write below paragraph)
I got a chance to read the index of the book and I found it inspiring and interesting due to its beautiful chapter headings. The next page mentioned that book has inspired a lot of people after reading the real story of Dr. Kalam. This shows how this book has created enthusiasm among readers giving a real example of a common man growing to trespass the toils and moils from his diligence and commitment towards his work.

(Closing sentence, it took 1 minutes to write below lines)
I think you would like this book a lot and thank me for recommending it to you.

(Finalising the letter)
Yours truly,
ABC

Thus, I took 10 minutes to write the complete letter. Now I have the chance to enhance it and do the spell check in the letter. Here is the complete letter

    1. You can count it by estimating the number of words you have used in one line. For example, in one line you write around 14 words, then you need to write at least 20 lines to complete the 250 word essay.
